There are just a couple of weeks left before Halloween, but don’t worry: Zillow has your sweet tooth covered. The popular real estate site recently released its list of the 20 best cities for trick-or-treating this year, and four of them are in California.
To determine a city’s trick-or-treat friendliness, Zillow looked at four equally-rated variables. First, operating on the age-old theory that rich people give out better candy, the site considered its own Home Value Index. It then measured factors like population density, walk score, and local crime data—in other words, the kind of stuff kids don’t really care about.
The #1 city for a Halloween sugar high was San Francisco, due in large part to its astronomical home values. This isn’t the first time San Francisco has topped this list but it still comes as a surprise to some, since San Francisco isn’t exactly known for its rich trick-or-treating traditions.
Los Angeles was runner-up. Angelenos have apparently stepped up their game since 2012, when the city came in at #7. Well-to-do neighborhoods like Brentwood, Pacific Palisades, and Cheviot Hills fared particularly well. We just hope they’re not handing out any of that fancy dark chocolate with the stuff in the middle. Yuck.
Two other California cities also made the cut. San Jose came in at #5 and San Diego came in at #10. Other U.S. cities in the top 10 include Chicago; Philadelphia; Honolulu; Boston; Seattle; and Portland.
