Talk about an anticlimactic event.
San Diego City Council Member Sherri Lightner was selected as Council President for the second time in one week on Tuesday. She was first elected to the post on December 10, but questions were soon raised as to whether there had been improper discussion before the vote. After conferring with the city attorney, the council opted to hold a revote on December 16. The results were predictably the same.
"I want to set a tone right from the start of my tenure as council president that I am strongly committed to being open and transparent, and I will put a particular emphasis on making sure we conduct council meetings consistent with the Brown Act's goals of public access to all public meetings and to the information on which all decisions are made," Lightner said.
City officials do not believe any Brown Act violations occurred, but made the decision under “an abundance of caution” in Lightner’s words.
Lightner now officially replaces Council Member Todd Gloria who had held the post for the past two years.
