Earlier this year, we reported that Los Angeles ranked fourth in the nation for bed bug infestations. Now we’re here to bring you even better news: it is also #1 in the nation for termites.
That’s right. According an annual ranking from the pest control company, Terminix, Los Angeles has the most infestations of any other city in the country. In fact, California is all over this list, with San Francisco coming in at #2, San Diego at #4, and Sacramento at #9.
The rankings were based on data from over 300 Terminix locations around the country and reflect infestations that occurred during the year 2014.
California’s susceptibility is no surprise.
“Termites thrive in warm, moist environments, making southern states like California, Texas and Florida the perfect environment for their destructive behavior,” said Doug Webb, Terminix technical specialist and wood-destroying insect expert. “But living elsewhere doesn’t mean you’re safe. Termites are active in all 50 states except Alaska, and regularly cause thousands of dollars of uninsured damage across the country.”
Other cities in the top 10 include Dallas-Fort Worth, TX (#3); Houston, Tx (#5); Miami-Fort Lauderdale, FL (#6); Phoenix, AZ (#7); and Atlanta, GA (#8). If you suspect you may have a termite problem, contact professionals immediately.Termite control and damage costs an estimated $2 billion each year in the United States, and damage is typically not covered by homeowners’ insurance policies.
