The cost of adopting a rabbit from a city shelter in Los Angeles could soon increase just in time for the Easter holiday.
Under a proposed ordinance, rabbits would be added to a list of pets—including cats and dogs—which currently must be microchipped.
The proposed ordinance aims to help owners reunite with their stray pets in the event that the animal is lost.
“I believe the growth of the population of rabbits… in Los Angeles is going to continue, so it’s something we need to be aware of,” said Animal Services Department General Brenda Barnette.
While the ordinance would make it easier for rabbits and their owners to reunite, it would also boost adoption fees from $56 to $71 after the $15 microchipping fee is taken into consideration. Microchipping after adoption would cost $25.
According to city records, 918 rabbits were adopted in the City of Los Angeles last year, and that number is only expected to grow.
Peter Cottontail could not be reached for comment.
