When San Francisco voters go to the polls this fall, they will also have the opportunity to extend access to family leave for city workers.
A Charter amendment introduced Tuesday by Supervisor Katy Tang would expand the city’s leave policy, which is already among the most generous in the country.
The San Francisco Chronicle reports, “Currently, city workers who are new parents can receive a standard 12 weeks of paid leave — the most given by any city in the country. However, workers must exhaust all of their sick leave first before accessing the benefit. Also, if both parents work for the city, they have to split the 12-week leave.
“Tang wants to amend the law to allow city workers to maintain one week of sick leave and to give everyone the full 12-week benefit regardless of whether their partner also works for the city.”
The proposed Charter amendment was co-sponsored by all 11 supervisors and endorsed by Mayor Ed Lee.
“In my mind, this is the next logical step in closing the gender-pay equity gap,” Supervisor Malia Cohen said.
