California may have a reputation for warm weather, but when it comes to hospitality the Golden State can apparently feel a little chilly.
Condé Nast Traveler has released its list of the most and least friendly cities in the nation for 2015, and two California cities have landed themselves on the unfriendly list. The results were based on their annual Reader’s Choice Survey, which garnered nearly 77,000 responses.
Newark, New Jersey took the top spot as the most unfriendly city in America, but it was closely followed by California’s very own Oakland at #2. Despite its status as an up-and-coming neighborhood and travel destination, one reader said the city would be "off limits to any law-abiding citizen" if it weren't for Lake Merritt.
Ouch!
Also making the top 10 unfriendliest cities list were Atlantic City, NJ (3); Detroit, MI (4); Hartford and New Haven, CT (5,6); The Hamptons, NY (7); Reno, NV (8); Los Angeles, CA (9); and Baltimore, MD (10). Unsurprisingly, when it came to Los Angeles, readers complained about the city’s “aggressive drivers,” squalor, and snobby celebrity culture.
California was conspicuously absent from Condé Nast Traveler’s list of the friendliest cities as well. Park City, UT ranked #1. It was followed by Savannah, GA and Charleston, SC.
