Former Los Angeles City Council Member Bill Rosendahl has died at the age of 70, following a four-year battle with cancer. Rosendahl passed away at his Mar Vista home Wednesday, according to his friend and successor, Los Angeles City Councilman Mike Bonin.
Rosendahl served on the council from 2005 to 2013 and was the first openly gay man elected to the dais. Prior to his time on the council, he enjoyed a successful career in political journalism, having produced 3,000 public affairs programs over 16 years.
"Bill was one of the most selfless and kind-hearted individuals I have ever known," said U.S. Rep. Janice Hahn (D-San Pedro) who served alongside him for several years. "That heart made him an incredible advocate and a beloved champion for the people he represented. He was brave in the face of adversity and had a contagious passion for life."
Rosendahl is survived by his longtime partner Hedi El Kholti.
