The Los Angeles City Council paid tribute to outgoing USGS seismologist Lucy Jones Wednesday, praising her years of dedication to earthquake safety and preparedness efforts in Southern California. Wednesday's ceremony was held in the John Ferraro Council Chamber at Los Angeles City Hall. The City Council also declared it "Lucy Jones Day" in honor of the beloved scientist.
“I care about L.A. It’s home. It’s been home for generations for my family,” Jones said at the event. Council Member Mitch Englander, meanwhile, praised her for bridging a "seismic" distance between science and policy.
As we reported last week, Jones has decided to retire from the USGS after an impressive 33-year career with the federal scientific agency. She has decided to concentrate more on policy aspects by helping to build a center dedicated to combating climate change and other environmental problems.
