Police have identified 39-year-old engineering professor William Klug as the victim in a murder-suicide that prompted a lockdown of the UCLA campus Wednesday. According to authorities, he was shot and killed by a disgruntled student who had become distraught over his grades.
Klug has been described as a loving husband and devoted father of two who coached his son’s soccer and Little League teams. He attended Westmont College for undergrad and obtained a master’s at UCLA, as well as a doctorate from Caltech.
Ironically, today is National Gun Violence Awareness Day. The fatal shooting occurred just as members of the Los Angeles City Council were staging a ceremony to commemorate it.
After news of the shooting broke, city leaders took the opportunity once again to call for greater restrictions on firearms. Mayor Eric Garcetti also offered his condolences in a statement Wednesday.
“My thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected by what appears to have been a murder-suicide on the campus of UCLA," the mayor said. "This horrific event, at an institution dedicated to learning and mutual understanding reminds us once again of the fragility of a peaceful society.”
