FBI officials have arrested a 36-year-old officer with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority on charges he provided material support to the terror group, ISIS. Wednesday’s arrest marks a turning point in the U.S. fight against terrorism; it is the first time a law enforcement officer has ever been arrested in connection with a terror plot.
The suspect, Nicholas Young of Fairfax, Virignia, was a convert to radical Islam, according to authorities. He had a history of erratic behavior and dark proclivities, including animal torture and expression of Nazi sympathies.
Young had worked for the Transit Authority since 2003. He was being monitored by authorities for years and eventually began communicating with FBI agents he believed to be terrorists.
Metro General Manager/CEO Paul J. Wiedefeld issued a statement to Heavy.com Wednesday:
“Metro Transit Police alerted the FBI about this individual and then worked with our federal partners throughout the investigation up to and including today’s arrest. Obviously, the allegations are profoundly disturbing to me, and they’re disturbing to everyone who wears the uniform.”
