California has made a list of jurisdictions being formally called out by the Trump Administration for failing to cooperate on immigration detainer requests. Multiple jails in the Golden State from Sacramento and Madera to Los Angeles and Orange counties were cited in the first ever Declined Detainer Outcome Report Monday. The document also named 10 jurisdictions that “routinely” flout detainer requests: Clark County, Nev.; Nassau County, N.Y.; Cook County, Ill.; Montgomery County, Iowa; Snohomish County, Wash.; Franklin County, N.Y.; Washington County, Ore.; Alachua County, Fla.; Franklin County, Iowa; and Franklin County, Penn.
“When law enforcement agencies fail to honor immigration detainers and release serious criminal offenders, it undermines ICE’s ability to protect the public safety and carry out its mission,” Acting ICE Director Thomas Homan said.
The suspense is building in Trump’s coming fight with the Golden State. In addition to a growing number of municipalities declaring themselves sanctuary cities, there’s a state sanctuary bill on the line. On Thursday, California Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye also weighed in with a letter to White House officials, asking ICE to stop “stalking” immigrants at the state’s courthouses.
