When it comes to attacks on mail carriers, California’s cities are going to the dogs.
Seven towns in the Golden State have made this year’s list of the US Postal Service’s 30 worst cities for dog bites. Los Angeles was No. 1 with a total of 80 attacks in 2016. Houston was runner-up, followed by Cleveland. San Diego came in at No. 4; Sacramento at No. 20; Oakland at No. 26; Long Beach at No. 27; San Jose at No. 28; and Fresno at No. 30. Nationwide, attacks were also up. Experts are blaming the growth of online sales and delivery.
Even good dogs can attack if they sense a threat, warned U.S. Postal Service Safety Director Linda DeCarlo.
“Dog bite prevention training and continuing education are important to keep pet owners, pets and those who visit homes — like letter carriers — happy and healthy.”
Ahead of Dog Bite Prevention Week, the USPS has issued a list of recommendations to prevent dog attacks. These include proper socialization, regular walks, leashing, and avoiding situations in which a dog feels threatened.
