Santa Rosa voters will soon weigh in on a proposal to tax marijuana grows and other businesses in an effort to offset regulation costs associated with the blooming industry. The tax would come by way of Measure D, set to appear on the June 6 ballot. There is no formal opposition to the tax so far.
Tawnie Logan, head of the Sonoma County Growers Alliance, called it a fair framework.
“It’s still a little high but it’s far more accessible than the rates proposed by the county.”
Under Measure D, Santa Rosa’s cultivators would initially be taxed at 2 percent of gross receipts or $5 per square foot of growing space. Those rates would eventually climb to 8 percent of gross receipts or $25 per square foot.
The city expects to reel in around $1 million at the starting rates.
