Honolulu is America’s most livable city in the U.S. according to the Economist’s Global Livability Rankings for 2017. Washington, D.C. was runner-up, with Boston, Chicago and Miami rounding out the top 5. Los Angeles came in at No. 10.
The Economist puts out a livability index every year. 140 cities were examined for the report. Their rankings are based on performance in five key areas: economic stability, healthcare, culture and environment, and infrastructure.
Here's the bad news: "U.S. scores have certainly declined over the last three or four years," said the survey’s editor Jon Copestake. "There's been a greater threat of civil unrest, and we've seen things like mass shootings and incidents of rising crime rates."
San Francisco was among those that experienced lower scores this year due to a decline in public safety.
Melbourne, Australia took the title of Most Livable City worldwide.
