By a show of hands, members of the International Olympic Committee officially designated Los Angeles host of the 2028 Summer Games in Lima, Peru Wednesday. The dramatic scene came after months of back-and-forth over who would get the games seven and eleven years from now. On Wednesday, Paris was also officially awarded the games for 2024.
Seated at a long table, Mayor Eric Garcetti then signed the “host city contract.”
“For the first time in a generation, we are bringing the Games back to the City of Angels,” he said in a statement. “L.A. loves the Olympics because the Games have lifted up our city twice before. But to us the Games have always represented an even brighter future and the chance to harness the power of sport and the Olympic Movement again to inspire the next generation - for the next 11 years and beyond.”
The mayor acknowledged it had been “a long journey,” but said it was worth fighting for.
NOlympics LA, which opposes bringing the games to the city, insists the fight isn’t over.
“The notion that ‘L.A. is going to have the Olympics, one way or another’ isn’t necessarily true, as many opportunities still exist to intervene and stop them entirely," a representative said.
Details about the funding and logistics are available at the L.A. Times.
