San Francisco supervisors have voted 8-3 to ban all commercial cannabis products from Chinatown and its surrounding areas. The prohibition, which was supported by newly-elected Mayor London Breed, represents a significant carve-out for the city’s liberal marijuana rules.
Supervisor Aaron Peskin spearheaded the effort. Hillary Ronen, Rafael Mandelman and Vallie Brown voted no, heeding the recommendation of the Planning Commission which urged the Board the reject the ban.
With the July 31 vote, cannabis sales will not only be prohibited in Chinatown, but also parts of North Beach along Broadway, Columbus Avenue and Kearny streets. A portion of Grant Avenue between Bush and California streets and parts of Commercial Street between Montgomery and Grant are also included in the ordinance.
