Federal Agents to Descend on SF's Tenderloin in Drug-Fighting Initiative

A San Francisco supervisor is addressing concerns about a sweeping, year-long federal law enforcement operation against drug trafficking in the Tenderloin.

District 6 Supervisor Matt Haney welcomed the initiative announced by U.S. Attorney Dave Anderson Wednesday. It will involve 15 different agencies.

“A comprehensive, collaborative plan to meaningfully address street-level drug dealing and the deadly drug use epidemic” is badly needed, Haney said. But he clarified that this is not an operation aimed at immigrants or low-level drug offenders.

“I strongly support our city's sanctuary city laws, I believe they keep us all safer, and if this is an attempt to get around those laws, I am absolutely opposed to that. The U.S. attorney's initiative should focus on high-level investigations and operations that are meant to disrupt the massive flow of deadly drugs into SOMA and the Tenderloin.”

Drug Enforcement Administration special agent Chris Nielsen said drug-dealing appears to have become “normalized” in the Tenderloin. The area has the largest number of drug prosecutions in the city.
