San Francisco Public Utilities Commission General Manager Harlan Kelly resigned last week after the U.S. Attorney’s Office charged him with fraud. He made his first court appearance on December 8.
Kelly is accused of accepting bribes, including a family trip to China, from permit expediter Walter Wong. Kelly’s wife, City Administrator Naomi Kelly, has taken voluntary leave from her post, though she admits no wrongdoing and has not been charged with a crime.
Harlan Kelly is one of a number of defendants in a widening investigation into City Hall corruption. It kicked off in January with charges against ex-Public Works head Mohammed Nuru and restaurateur Nick Bovis.
Among other things, it was revealed in court last week that investigators found traces of cocaine when they raided Kelly's home. His attorney said the traces were left by a visitor. He has not been charged with any drug-related crimes.
Kelly will appear in court again on Feb. 2.
