Fresno City Councilman Garry Bredefeld has been removed from the City Schools Liaison Subcommittee after announcing his intention to initiate a lawsuit against the school district.

Bredefeld wants to see Fresno Unified reopen classrooms for in-person learning, especially in light of CDC findings that schools with proper mitigation measures are not major vectors for viral spread. That idea was roundly rejected by Fresno City Council Vice President Nelson Esparza.

“I think we all want schools to reopen but this is obviously not the proper approach," Esparza said. She added that a lawsuit would not be initiated and that Bredefeld would be removed from the subcommittee.

In response to Bredefeld’s comments, the school district has reiterated that transmission rates are still too high to resume in-person learning. The councilman has been trading barbs with Superintendent Bob Nelson on Twitter.

Bredefeld’s interest in a lawsuit comes on the heels of similar litigation in San Francisco.
