Outdoor dining is back, but not without restrictions. LA County has issued strict new rules for restaurants, breweries, and wineries.
Face coverings and face shields must be worn by workers who have contact with customers. Outdoor service must be limited by 50%. Tables must be 8 feet apart with no more than 6 people per table, all of whom must be from the same household. And television sets cannot be turned on.
Why television sets? County health officials are worried about people gathering around the tube, particularly for Super Bowl. Shouting, which some sports fans are known to do, also increases transmission risk.
California COVID-19 deaths surged last month, but hospitalizations are on the decline. Health officials want to make sure the biggest sport event of the year doesn’t become another superspreader. If the holidays were any indication, they may not have much of a choice.
