Three new members were appointed to the San Francisco Unified School District board by Mayor London Breed on Friday. Ann Hsu, Lainie Mota-Medi, and Lisa Weissman-Ward replace three trustees who were ousted in last month’s stunning recall election. They will serve out the remainder of the previous members’ terms, which expire on Dec. 31.
Hsu is the president of Galileo Academy of Science and Technology’s Parent Teacher Student Association, as well as chairperson of the district’s Independent Citizens’ Bond Oversight Committee. Motamedi is a volunteer lead for the National Park Service and most recently served as co-chair of the SFUSD Public Education Enrichment Fund Committee. Weissman-Ward is an attorney who serves as associate director of the Stanford Law School Immigrants’ Rights Clinic. She is also a member of the National Lawyers Guild and the American Immigration Lawyers Association.
All three trustees have children in the district. This may be their most important qualification.
“They’ve experienced personally all of the challenges that we experienced over the last year,” Siva Raj, who co-led the recall effort, told KRON.
Raj said two of the women were previously identified as potential replacements and polled well with the public. The poll results were shared with Mayor Breed.
