Bomb-Sniffing Dogs Sent to Sen. Scott Wiener’s Home After Death Threat

Authorities deployed bomb-sniffing dogs to the home of State Sen. Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) over the weekend following an anonymous threat that claimed explosives had been placed inside his home. A search of the property by canines, San Francisco police, and officials with the California Highway Patrol did not reveal any explosives but left Wiener, his aides, and others elected officials shaken.

The note, which was sent to Wiener’s staff, referred to him as a “f***ing pedophile” and said “we will kill you.” It specifically mentioned Drag Queen Story Hour – a program available at some public libraries where parents can bring children to listen to books read by people in drag.

This is the second incident involving the LGBTQ-friendly program this past weekend. On Saturday afternoon, the far-right Proud Boys group disrupted Drag Queen Story Hour at the San Lorenzo Library. People at the library described the group as “extremely aggressive with a threatening violent demeanor causing people to fear for their safety.” The sheriff’s department was called and a hate crime investigation was launched. It is not clear if the Lorenzo Library incident and the threat against Sen. Wiener are connected.

The threat against Wiener was also one of two frightening incidents involving elected officials in San Francisco over the weekend. On Sunday, Millbrae City Councilman Anders Fung was attacked with a cement block while out hiking with his family at Lands End. The councilman was taken to the hospital with a head wound that required multiple stitches and an MRI scan. Fung, who is a Chinese immigrant, believes it was a racially-motivated attack.
