Antisemitic banners hung on a bicycle overpass at UC Davis have shaken the campus and its surrounding community, prompting a response from the mayor.
Campus police are investigating the incident. One of the banners said “Holocaust is an anti-white lie.” The other read: “Communism is Jewish.” The last banner was hung by four white men who were wearing black clothing, campus police said.
“Hate has no place in Davis, and a common denominator to Holocaust deniers is Anti-Semitism,” said Mayor Lucas Frerichs in a statement. “As Mayor, I stand in support w/our Jewish community in Davis, UCD & beyond.”
Chancellor Gary May said UC Davis staff were “sickened” by the incident.
“We encourage our community to stand against antisemitism and racism,” May said.
“White supremacy, hate and intimidation have no place here.”
