Former San Francisco Public Works Director Mohammed Nuru was sentenced to seven years in prison Thursday for his part in a wide-ranging public corruption scheme.
Nuru pleaded guilty to corruption charges in January. Federal prosecutors alleged he accepted more than $1 million in bribes from contractors and developers in exchange for favorable treatment and information. The probe ensnared other city leaders, including former Public Utilities General Manager Harlan Kelly, who is also accused of taking thousands of dollars in bribes.
Public Works Deputy Director for Operations DiJaida Durden was among friends, family, and officials who appealed to the judge for leniency in Nuru’s sentencing.
In a statement, Nuru said he accepts “full responsibility for violating the public trust,” and that he has learned his lesson.
