Oxnard Councilwoman Vianey Lopez has been appointed by the Governor to the Ventura County Board of Supervisors. She will replace the late District 5 representative Carmen Ramirez, who died on August 12.

Lopez was elected to the Oxnard City Council in 2018 and also serves as District Director for California State Senator Monique Limón. From 2012 to 2018, she sat on the Hueneme Elementary School District Board. She worked as District Scheduler for U.S. Congresswoman Lois Capps from 2013 to 2016. She has been a Program Coordinator for the Oxnard Downtown Management District and an Administrative Assistant and Concierge at the Oxnard Convention and Visitors Bureau. She is a member of the League of United Latin American Citizens and Future Leaders of America with a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Loyola Marymount University and a master’s in public policy from Pepperdine University.

“I am honored and humbled to have been appointed by Governor Newsom to the Ventura County Board of Supervisors to carry out the term of my friend and mentor, Carmen Ramirez,” Lopez said in a statement. “Carmen was unwavering in her passion for public service and the belief in working together for the greater good. I am committed to this purpose and working towards building a better and brighter future for Ventura County and its residents. I am overwhelmed with gratitude for the outpouring of support I have received from people throughout our community.”

“As an immigrant and the daughter of immigrants who are so fortunate to call Ventura County our home, I recognize the extraordinary opportunity afforded to me,” Lopez added. “Instilled with the values of hard work, determination, and optimism, I look forward to continuing to serve my community in this new role. Ventura County is a remarkable place, and I will work to ensure it remains a place where opportunity is abundant and where working people and their families can prosper and thrive.”

Board Chairman Matt LaVere, who has temporarily been representing District 5 as a non-voting member, thanked Governor Newsom for the swift appointment.

“Having worked with Ms. Lopez, I know she will be a great asset to our Board, and my colleagues and I look forward to working with her in this new capacity to serve our community and to keep Ventura County moving forward,” LaVere said.

Lopez is expected to be sworn in on Oct. 4 and will serve until the next general election in November 2024. The Oxnard City Council can either appoint a replacement or hold a special election to fill her seat.
