The California Geological Survey (CGS) has updated its Tsunami Hazard Maps for the counties of San Diego, Ventura, Santa Cruz, Marin, Sonoma, Napa, and Solano. The most recent maps show increased risk of tsunami flooding deeper inland.
A sizable tsunami could flood parts of the Napa County Airport and almost all of Sausalito and Bolinas. A subduction zone earthquake off the Aleutian Islands could send 18-25-foot waves over the Santa Cruz Boardwalk, which is more than double the height anticipated in 2009.
California has been hit by more than 150 tsunamis since 1800, according to CGS. The purpose of the maps is to ensure preparedness for coastal communities.
“The updated Tsunami Hazard Area Maps can be used by officials, communities, & individuals/families to update or create their tsunami evacuation plans,” the agency tweeted.
