There’s been a major plot twist in the case of a former San Francisco fire commissioner who was allegedly assaulted by a homeless man with a crowbar last month. Police say they’re now investigating the ex-commissioner, Don Carmignani, for a series of unprovoked attacks on homeless people in the city.
Footage of one of those attacks can be seen here. It shows the suspect approach a person who is sleeping on a sidewalk and spray them in the face with bear spray. The suspect’s face is not visible, but their build is similar to Carmignani’s. The attacks all occurred near Carmignani’s Marina district home.
Carmignani denies he is the person in the video and says he is not the one responsible for the assaults. His team has released its own footage from the day he was beaten. The suspect in that case, a homeless individual named Garret Doty, appears to take practice swings with a crowbar before brutally attacking Carmignani. The ex-commissioner suffered severe injuries, including a cracked skull and broken jaw.
Doty’s public defender insists her client was acting in self-defense and that Carmignani is the violent vigilante police have been looking for.
