California experienced another surge in hate crimes last year, a new report from the California Department of Justice shows. There were 2,120 such crimes in 2022. That represents a 20% jump from 2021 and a 145.7% increase over the last decade.
There were 857 incidents in Los Angeles County alone. There were 110 in Orange County, 74 in the Inland Empire, 105 in San Diego County, 109 in Alameda County, 41 in San Francisco, and 114 in Sacramento County.
The cities of Los Angeles, San Diego and San Jose saw 609, 39, and 106 hate crimes respectively.
Reported hate crimes motivated by sexual orientation bias increased 29%. Crimes against African Americans rose 27.1%, antisemitic crimes were up 24.3%, and anti-white crimes increased 24.1%. Anti-Latino hate crimes were also up 6.6%.
One of the few positive data points was the drop in anti-Asain hate crimes, which fell to 140 (-43.3%) in 2022.
