Think you’re devoted to your job? Well, one city council member in Clovis, California is about to put you to shame.
Councilman Harry Armstrong will be 86 this October. He was first elected to the council in 1970. 1970! And yet, he’s still serving earnestly on the Clovis City Council, undaunted even by a recent health scare.
No one will ever accuse Armstrong of ‘phoning it in,’ even though that’s quite literally what he’s doing. Since his hospitalization in January for pneumonia, Armstrong has been participating in council meetings by phone. His home was recently declared a public place so that he could do so.
“Everyone has been very supportive,” said Armstrong, who also suffers from COPD. “I still kind of have my finger on it. They keep me well informed.”
Mayor Nathan Magsig said he sees Armstrong a few times a week and that he’s fully participating in city government despite his ailment.
The veteran councilman doesn’t intend to be out for long. As soon as he’s back on his feet, he said he’ll return to chambers. Actually, he’s first planning to come in a wheelchair while he heals. Because that's how a badass councilman rolls.
