Miguel Camarena has always wanted to be a cop. He mostly kept that dream to himself because it seemed futile. Camarena only earned his U.S. citizenship a couple of years ago after nearly a decade working in a cell phone repair shop. By the time he had his citizenship papers, he was already in his 40s.
Then Camarena’s daughter joined the Reseda Police Academy magnet program, and Camarena’s lifelong dreams were laid bare. His family encouraged him to pursue a career in law enforcement despite his age.
On Friday, Camarena became one of the oldest people to graduate from the Los Angeles Police Academy. At the age of 45, he is now the LAPD’s newest rookie cop.
“It wasn't easy; it was hard. I had tough times," Camarena told ABC News. "One of the things that prevented me from doing it (earlier) is I didn't have my citizenship until a couple years ago."
He added:
"I feel amazing. I feel very honored to wear this uniform. We want to help our community, but for me I also want to be a motivation for my kids, and for Hispanic people as well to let them know you're never too old to pursue your dreams."
Congratulations, officer Camarena!
