Some 90 million Americans own a cat. That number climbed during the pandemic, as isolated Americans ran out to shelters and pet stores to ease their loneliness (and give themselves a reason to start waking up at 3 am).
Whether you’ve been crazy about them for years or you just stumbled into cat ownership recently, you know they’re not as easy as conventional wisdom suggests. They may be more independent than dogs, but they still require some basic supplies, health care, and an entire household willing to bend at their will.

To those cat owners looking for the purrrfect city for life with their fur babies, PetListed has you covered. The popular pet guide has put together a list of the the 100 most cat-friendly cities in the US in 2021.
PetListed analyzed thousands of data points across four main metrics, including cat-friendly housing, number of AAFP veterinarian practices, local animal shelters and welfare groups, and the number of pet stores that sell cat products.
The top three cat-friendly cities nationwide were Birmingham, Alabama; Portland, Oregon; and Madison, Wisconsin.
