Anaheim officials are looking into allegations that their two top police officers have been cheating the city out of taxpayer money.
The stunning claims were detailed in an internal memo obtained earlier this month by ABC7 News. It included allegations that Anaheim Police Chief Raul Quezada and Deputy Chief Dan Cahill were cooking their time cards by underreporting vacation days. As a result, Quezada and Cahill may have been paid more than $24,000 and $38,000 respectively for time they did not work.
Quezada was hired two years ago amid strained relations between the community and police stemming from a string of officer-involved shootings. At the time of his hiring, he said restoring trust in the department would be a top priority.
An outside law firm is conducting the review. The officers will keep working in the meantime—a concern for the Anaheim Police Officers’ Association.
“That gives off the appearance that somehow this investigation is being treated differently than any administrative investigation,” said union president Edgar Hampton.
