California City’s revolving door of city managers is spinning once again.
After just nine months, Christopher Lopez has announced his resignation, dealing another blow to the troubled Antelope Valley city. Lopez is the eighth administrator to serve over the past three years.
According to Bakersfield Now, Lopez has accepted a job with another city.
Mayor Marquette “Marq” Hawkins issued the following statement after the city manager’s announcement:
It is with respect that I announce the resignation of California City Manager Christopher Lopez. His decision is not the result of any action taken by my office or the city council, but rather a personal choice.
Mr. Lopez has served this community with dedication during a challenging period, and I want to acknowledge his hard work, professionalism, and commitment to public service. The responsibilities of leading a city—especially one in transition and facing significant operational, financial, and organizational demands—can place tremendous pressure on any city manager.
Mr. Lopez stated the following: “I am extremely grateful for my time in California City and for the faith and trust placed in me by the Mayor and Council. Mayor Hawkins and the Council have shown nothing but professionalism, respect, and courage during my tenure with California City. I am committed to ensuring a smooth transition that builds on the City’s current strategic direction.”
I thank Mr. Lopez for his contributions to California City and wish him success in his future endeavors. The City Council and I will work collaboratively and transparently to ensure a smooth transition. Our focus remains on stability, continuity of services, and the continued progress of our city.
Together, we will move forward with purpose and unity.
