Sales tax increases went into effect Tuesday, April 1 for several counties and dozens of cities across the state.
The following countywide increases are now in effect:
- Butte — 1%
- Humboldt — 1%
- Los Angeles — 0.5%
- Sonoma — 0.25%
The new rates in the aforementioned counties are 8.25% (Butte), 8.75% (Humboldt), 9.75% (Los Angeles), and 9.25% (Sonoma).
Mariposa County’s sales tax declined from 8.75% to 8.25% due to the expiration of an earlier increase.
In California’s most populous county, Los Angeles, the cities with the largest hikes were Lancaster and Palmdale, which went from 10.25% to 11.25%. That’s because they passed an additional 0.75% tax on top of the countywide increase.
Compton, Lynwood, Pico Rivera, Santa Monica, Santa Fe Springs, and South Gate had the second-largest increases. The rates in these cities are now 10.75%.
The City of Arcata also added a 0.75% increase on top of the increase in Humboldt County. As a result, Arcata’s rate went from 8.5% to 10.25%, a rise of 1.75 percentage points.
