The race for L.A. City Council District 14 saw a new round of controversy last week when one of Kevin de León’s challengers, Assemblymember Wendy Carrillo, was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving.

Carrillo was arrested around 1:30 a.m. Friday in Los Angeles and booked into jail a few hours later. The East L.A. politician reportedly hit some parked cars during the incident. Tests showed her alcohol levels were more than twice the state’s limit for driving, according to police.

“As a public servant, I am aware that I must adhere to a higher standard that demands personal accountability for my conduct and I accept responsibility for my actions,” Carrillo said. “I sincerely apologize to my family, constituents, colleagues and staff for any actions of mine that have fallen short of that expectation. I intend to seek the necessary help and support. As I do so, I remain dedicated to my family, my constituents and the community that I grew-up in and am proud to represent.”

De León has decided to run for another term, despite being caught up in last year’s racist tape scandal. Carillo, tenant advocate Ysabel Jurado, and attorney Teresa Hillery are running against him.

Carillo’s arrest could reframe the race which, until now, was strictly a referendum on the incumbent.
