Monday was another day of rejoicing for the Special Olympics community, as two missing participants were safely located just hours apart and a few hundred miles from each other.
Special Olympics athlete Andi Gusmari walked into the Hayward Police Department’s headquarters at 1:30 a.m. on Monday complaining of hunger. The 44-year-old, who had been missing since Saturday, will now return to Albania to be reunited with his family, authorities said.
At 2 p.m. Monday, another missing athlete, Ivory Coast teenager Shion Isimel, was found wandering in Inglewood.
"He's in good health," said Lt. James Kirk of the Inglewood Police Department.
Isimel had been missing since 5:49 a.m. Monday.
The 14th Special Olympics Summer Games were held in Los Angeles July 25 through August 2. The international sports competition for those with intellectual disabilities saw 6,500 athletes from 165 different nations competing.
It is unclear how or way Gusmari ended up in the Bay Area.
