Last year, a Baldwin Park business owner and three other community activists were fined for posting signs that depicted Councilman Ricardo Pacheco as a donkey. Today, they’re getting the last hee-haw.
The city is reconsidering its zoning policy following the filing of a lawsuit by business owner Greg Tuttle. In addition, it is permitting Tuttle and his group to post four of their donkey signs which direct people to a website alleging corruption on the part of Pacheco.
It’s unclear exactly what changes will be made to the city code. Right now, permits must be obtained before any signs can be displayed in the city unless they’re political and posted around election time. Tuttle argued that the fines levied against him for his signs constituted a violation of free speech.
City staff is expected to present recommended changes to the zoning code at the Planning Commission’s meeting on Feb. 22. A first reading by the city council would then be held on March 15, followed by a second reading on April 5. If approved, the changes would take effect May 5.
