Would Berkeley even be Berkeley if it weren’t calling for the impeachment of Donald Trump? I think not.
Berkeley this week became the latest city to call for an investigation that could lead to the impeachment of President Donald Trump.
On March 28, the City Council unanimously approved a resolution, co-sponsored by Mayor Jesse Arreguin and Councilwoman Sophie Hahn, calling on the U.S. House of Representatives to direct its Judiciary Committee to investigate whether sufficient grounds exist for impeaching Trump.
Mayor Arreguin referenced a number of actions by the Trump Administration, including the refugee ban and his threat to defund sanctuary cities. But, like Richmond, the council’s primary focus is on alleged violations of the Emolument’s Clause, which prohibits the acceptance of foreign gifts without the consent of Congress. As City News noted previously, this a sticky issue legally and it has never been seriously tested in the courts.
Berkeley wasn’t the first to start pushing for Trump’s impeachment. That honor went to Richmond, another ultra-progressive enclave in Alameda County. The city of Alameda followed. Now, third time’s a charm. Or three’s a crowd. Or whatever adage you want to throw in there based on your political persuasion.
Who’s next?
