The Berkeley City Council has passed a resolution establishing “Green Mondays” when only animal-free products will be served at city events and meetings. As part of the declaration, the city is also calling for a public service campaign to raise awareness about the environmental impact of meat production and animal farming in the United States.
City officials haven’t picked a target date for the resolution to go into effect. They hope to implement Green Mondays by the end of the year.
"I'm not asking people to give up meat, I'm asking us all to think about what it is that we do every day, how we can reduce our meat consumption," said the legislation’s author, Councilwoman Kate Harrison.
A number of other cities have passed resolutions in support of the meatless Monday campaign, including Los Angeles, Long Beach, and San Francisco. But Thursday’s vote makes Berkeley the first city to fully support vegan Mondays by promoting a ban on any animal-based products at city events once a week.
