This has been a year of reckoning for social justice and equality. The COVID-19 pandemic had already exposed glaring racial inequities in public health when George Floyd was killed at the hands of Minneapolis police in May. His deathl sparked nationwide protests against systemic racism in policing.
As individuals took to the streets, local governments and institutions also made their collective voices heard. Some cities have already passed resolutions acknowledging the problem of systemic racism and vowing to pursue a more just and equitable society.
The Public Health Institute’s CA4Health Program has now developed a sample resolution for cities in California that wish to get on board. The resolution acknowledges “the historic role local governments have played in systemically driving and perpetuating societal inequities along racial lines.” It condemns all forms of racism and violence and affirms a commitment to advancing diversity, equality, and social justice.
