Two members of the California City Council resigned this month, leaving the five-member dais with just three representatives.
Jesse Hightower and Michael Kulikoff stepped down during a July 8 meeting in which officials sparred over a $1,000 membership fee for Mayor Marquette Hawkins to join the African American Mayors Association. Hightower opposed paying for the membership, citing the city’s fiscal challenges.
Some members of the public accused Hightower of racism. Hightower called one public commenter “an idiot.” The issue was ultimately rendered moot when an anonymous donor stepped up to cover the $1,000 fee.
Kulikoff said his resignation was unrelated to the membership fee dispute.
The council met last Monday to discuss its options for filling the vacancies. A special election was rejected because of cost. The city estimated the price tag to be $50,000.
Michael Hurles proposed fast-tracking the appointment of two candidates who are already well known at City Hall. However, the council decided to take more time to deliberate. Over the next two weeks, officials will vet applicants for the seats. Interested parties have until July 29 to apply.
