California City News Sees Record Number of City Manager Openings

There are 10 open positions for city manager and another two for a deputy and assistant city manager on our jobs board — an all-time record at California City News. These include highly desirable gigs in cities like Mountain View and Simi Valley.

Here’s a run-down:

Bakersfield

The Kern County city is looking to replace Alan Tandy who is retiring after nearly three decades with Bakersfield’s government. Read the full job description here.

Brentwood

Brentwood City Manager Gus Vina announced his retirement over the summer, effective at year’s end. The full job description is available here. The filing deadline is Thursday, Oct. 31, so act quickly.

Duarte

The Los Angeles County city of just under 22,000 located along historic Route 66 is in the market for a new top administrator. Read more about the job here.

Hawthorne

The City of Hawthorne, known as the “City of Good Neighbors,” is proud of its cultural and ethnic diversity within a resident base of 88,000. Now the city is seeking a charismatic and dedicated new City Manager to build on the recent successes of the retiring City Manager. Learn more about the job here.

Hermosa Beach

Hermosa is looking for a Deputy City Manager. This position is open to applicants through Nov. 1.

Mountain View

This coveted position in the Silicon Valley is available thanks to the retirement of Dan Rich. He steps down in December after 27 years in local government. Mountain View’s next city manager will earn a generous salary of $300,000 - $330,000. Read more here.

Port Hueneme

Port Hueneme is looking for a seasoned public sector manager and administrator with an ability to develop consensus and credibility though strong relationships. A strong background in budget, finance and administration is essential in this role and candidates must have management experience. Read the full job description here.

Richmond

Richmond is a waterfront city of 110,000 on the east shore of San Francisco Bay, five miles north of Berkeley and seven miles “as the crow flies” from downtown San Francisco. Richmond is one of the most racially and ethnically diverse cities in the Bay Area and has one of the most progressive city governments in California. Santa Ana

Santa Ana is looking for an Assistant City Manager to assist with the overall management of City operations. He or she will also serve as a principal advisor to the City Manager regarding operational, administrative, and budgetary matters in all City agencies. Read the job description here.

City Manager Ron Stock is retiring after 39 years in public service. The next City Manager of this Siskiyou County city will make $120,132 to $144,144 plus excellent benefits including PERS retirement 2%.
