California City’s interim manager Michele Martinez has resigned less than three months after taking the job. Martinez cited concerns about her personal safety and wellbeing.
Mayor Kelly Kulikoff elaborated on Martinez’s decision to step down after such a short time.
“Unfortunately we have a lot of harassment by special interests against city officials, so it's nothing new. Sometimes it just gets out of hand," he told 23 ABC.
Martinez was the city’s seventh manager in two years. She had recently pushed for the addition of a deputy city manager to alleviate the high demands of the chief administrator’s job.
Harassment and intimidation of public officials is a growing problem. A 2023 survey found female officials are even more likely to experience threats and harassment.
