California’s Attorney General Puts Vallejo PD Under the Microscope

California Attorney General Xavier Becerra will conduct a comprehensive review of the Vallejo Police Department. The decision to act follows shocking video of a police officer shooting a 22-year-old unarmed man who was on his knees with his hands up. The shooting took place during lootings that swept a number of cities around the country.

The review “will aim to support effective policing through improvements in use-of-force procedures, anti-bias and community policing, and accountability by focusing on training, policy, and transparency in alignment with national standards, best practices, current and emerging research and community expectations," per the AG’s office.

The most recent death is one of several high-profile police shootings in recent years in the City of Vallejo. And it comes amid a groundswell of nationwide support for major policing reforms sparked by the death of George Floyd. In Minneapolis, where Floyd was killed at the hands of police, city leaders have pledged to defund the police department and completely revamp public safety. U.S. House Democrats have proposed a bill that would ban chokeholds and no-knock warrants, create a federal registry for officers accused of misconduct, and limit military equipment transfers to local police.
