Election season never ends in LA County!
Los Angeles County is home to the majority of cities that hold off-cycle elections.
This year has already seen some fireworks off-cycle.
In February, while Angelenos were getting back to their normal routines after the holidays, Carson held an election to recall City Clerk and former Mayor Jim Dear. City workers accused Dear of making racist comments, acting erratically at public meetings, and harassment.
Despite low voter turnout, final numbers showed 53.8 percent in favor of the recall, removing him from office and placing Councilwoman Donesia Gause into the seat. Interestingly, Dear was the subject of a previous recall attempt back in 2008 when he was Mayor of Carson, but managed to keep the seat.
Hermosa Beach also held an off-cycle special election on March 1, just four months after the city’s November city council elections. The Special election was held entirely through mail-in ballots to elect a new councilmember, after former Councilwoman Nanette Barragán stepped down to focus on her race for Congress in the 44th district.
Two candidates filed to fill her seat -- Stacey Armato, former chair of Keep Hermosa Hermosa, and Trent Larson, former Redondo Beach budget and finance commissioner. With predictable low turnout, Stacey Armato was elected to the open seat with 72% of the vote.
