Carson has promoted its assistant city manager, David C. Roberts, Jr., to the chief executive’s role. Roberts will replace Sharon Landers who stepped down as city manager amid controversy at City Hall.

Roberts is a United States veteran and longtime public servant with over 22 years of experience in the private and public sector. He has served as assistant city manager since 2018, overseeing Community Services, Code Enforcement, Emergency Services, Information Technology, City Council staff and the Public Information Office. He holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree from California State University, Long Beach.

“The City Council is very pleased to have as our new city manager one who has had an extensive and diverse career in a multitude of cities and government agencies,” Mayor Lula Davis-Holmes said in a news release. “We have seen Mr. Roberts successfully take on many significant responsibilities over the past few years and we are confident that he can be the leader we need at this time. He has a great team to work with and the Council expects David’s leadership will bring a positive direction for our city.”

“I believe in building bridges not barriers,” said Roberts. That will be key in a city that has seen political drama and infighting as of late. In the span of three months, the city lost its city clerk, director of Human Resources, and city manager either to resignation or firing.
