A memorial service for late Menifee Mayor Neil Winter will be held on Saturday, June 2 from 8-9 p.m. at the Sun City Civic Association. Members of the public are welcome and encouraged to attend.
Winter passed away suddenly at his home on May 19 at the age of 65. Emergency personnel were dispatched to his house sometime in the evening where they found him in full cardiac arrest. He was not known to be suffering from any serious illness.
Winter, a retired teacher and software engineer by trade, won his first election as mayor in November 2016. He was known for his accessibility and supported open communication between government and members of the public at every turn.
During his campaign for mayor, he and his wife could often be seen holding up campaign signs on street corners.
"Neil changed the culture of the city and worked tirelessly to connect with the residents," said Menifee Union School District Trustee Jerry Bowman.
Mayor Pro Tem Lesa Sobek is now fulfilling mayoral duties. In lieu of flowers, the Winter family has requested donations to the Boys and Girls Club of Menifee.
