Eleven California cities are being recognized for the use of technology to improve public services, encourage civic engagement and further government transparency. The Center for Digital Government (CDG) announced the results of its annual Digital Cities Survey on Nov. 9, with Los Angeles ranking among the top place winners.
“This year’s top digital cities are using technology to ensure citizens can meaningfully interact with city government more easily than any other time in history,” said Todd Sander, executive director of the Center for Digital Government. “From open data portals to enhanced connectivity and mobile platforms, this year’s top-ranked cities are actively promoting transparency, encouraging citizen participation and making it easier for people to do business with government. Congratulations to the winners!"
The CDG breaks the winners down into five population categories. Here were the California cities taking home accolades this year:
- Los Angeles at No. 1 and San Francisco at No. 8 for cities with populations of 500,000 or more.
- Long Beach at No. 6 and Sacramento at No. 7 for cities with populations of 250,000 to 499,999.
- Modesto at No. 7, Pasadena and Rancho Cucamonga tied at No. 8, for cities with populations of 125,000 to 249,999.
- Newport Beach at No. 6 and San Leandro at No. 8 for cities with populations of 75,000 to 124,999.
- Palo Alto at No. 5 for cities of up to 75,000 people.
In addition to Los Angeles, the cities of Virginia Beach, Durham, Roanoke, and Tamarac, Florida took home first place prizes.
