Homicide rates are up in California for the second year in a row, but some cities and counties have seen more troubling increases than others.
The Sacramento Bee has compiled a list of the cities with the highest murder rates in 2016 based on the latest FBI statistics. The list excludes cities with fewer than 50,000 residents.
California Cities With Highest Homicide Rates in 2016
1. Compton (35.4 per 1,000 residents)
2. San Bernardino (28.5 per 1,000 residents)
3. Salinas (22.1 per 1,000 residents)
4. Oakland (20 per 1,000 residents)
5. Richmond (18.9 per 1,000 residents)
6. Stockton (15.9 per 1,000 residents)
There were some cities that saw no murders last year. California cities with 0 homicides in 2016 include Carlsbad; Elk Grove; Fremont; Murrieta; Roseville; and Thousand Oaks.
Data was compiled and reported by the Sacramento Bee based on FBI statistics. This list does not reflect statistics on all 482 California cities.
