The City of Auburn has selected Knoxville, Iowa assistant city manager Dylan Feik as its new head of Administrative Services, but one council member is not pleased with the way the selection was handled.

On Friday, it was announced that City Manager Tim Rundel had selected Feik for the job. Council Member Bill Kirby soon expressed disappointment, saying he had hoped there would be an advertisement for the position first.

“I think the position should be put out for application,” said the longtime council member. Kirby expressed concern that Feik would be unfamiliar with California’s financial rules and regulations and noted that his experience in municipal government was relatively short.

On Monday, however, Kirby stuck a much more conciliatory tone, saying all of his questions had since been answered. His criticism, he clarified, was always aimed at the process itself and not at Feik.

Council Members Keith Nesbitt and Mike Holmes praised the selection and said they found Feik to be an impressive individual during interviews.

Feik has served the City of Knoxville since 2012. In his capacity as assistant city manager, he has been responsible for overseeing the Planning and Zoning, Building Inspections, and Public Works Departments.  Before coming to Knoxville, he worked as a budget analyst for the City of Olathe, Kansas. He attended Weber State University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Government. He then went on to receive a Master of Public Administration from the University of Kansas in 2011.
